A convincing-looking leaked screenshot from an internal Samsung presentation has done the rounds on tech sites such as Tech Radar and Pocket Lint today, showing off supposed specifications for the follow-up to Samsung's smash-hit Galaxy S II smartphone.
Labelled 'Private Internal Presentation, October 2011,' and 'Copying or reproduction not allowed,' the screenshot shows off a phone with a 1.8Ghz dual-core processor, a huge 2GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel camera and 4.6-inch Super AMOLED screen.
The phone will also have an ultra-fast 4G connection, at least in territories such as the US where 4G networks are on offer.
12 megapixel camera
1.8GHz dual core processor
2GB RAM
Huge 4.6-inch Super AMOLED screen
The phone races ahead of Apple's iPhone 4S on the specs front. Apple's new model has a mere 1.2GHz procesor, 768Mb of RAM and an 8 megapixel camera. The iPhone 4S's screen is also far smaller, at a mere 3.5 inches.
A hi-tech new model of Samsung's Galaxy S II is unveiled in Korea - but the new S III could be a redesign for the hit handset, which helped catapult Samsung ahead of Nokia in the smartphone market
The new iPhone 4S is a barely visible tweak on the old design (old is on the left, in case you're wondering). Rivals such as Samsung are pushing the limits of their handsets in advance of iPhone 5.
Samsung's SIII is also rumoured to be a significant redesign from the current SII, thinner and with four buttons - possibly to forestall further legal action between the two companies. Both Apple and Samsung are locked in legal battles over patents in several territories. Samsung has filed suits in France and Italy in advance of iPhone 4S's launch.
The leak was reported by Android site Phandroid, and looks credible - although sharp-eyed observers have pointed to spelling errors, and that it misreports the processor Galaxy SII launched with.Such errors are not altogether implausible for a Korea-based company such as Samsung, however.
'If the specs are right, it looks like Samsung will have a great handset in the works.'The phone, whatever its specifications, is expected to launch early next year.
